Agree, definitely. Insofar as it's a message we tell girls and women to help them heal themselves, absolutely that needs to be communicated.

But that message takes place in a context where there are likely countless voices in a girl's life teaching her something else. So I think it's equally important to acknowledge for girls that their families, their religious leaders, their teachers, the media etc won't agree with this. We can help them problem solve in advance to figure out how to navigate situations where others assert an intrusive right to their bodies.

A good example of that need for both messages at once is in consent-based sex ed. Studies suggest it's incredibly empowering for many girls and some boys, but it doesn't actually lower incidents of rape because rapists don't care if their victim is consenting. So we need both empowerment and real structural change.
