Agree that no one should be “defined by a label.”
But I think it’s easy to say things like that without coming to a consensus about what that means.
Having a label means having access to resources.
It means having protection from being fired for symptoms of the disorder. If Sheldon were a real person, he would have been fired long before being able to earn his Nobel Prize. That’s worth considering for both employers and HR departments.
It means students get support in schools.
Not every student needs that.
But for some students, it’s the difference between dropping out vs attending an Ivy League. I’ve met those people.
It’s okay to need help.
We can typically laugh about parts of ourselves when we experience basic safety and respect from the most important people in our lives, like our parents and our spouses.
Too many people don’t experience that.
We can’t take it for granted that’s the norm.
