Commenters here are missing the point. Movies about poverty in Black communities typically fall into stereotypical representations of violence, gang life, and drugs. A film like this about Black elders and their struggles would not be made, because studio execs, media, and perhaps white audiences would not term it “universal” enough.

I have the same reaction to endless stories that center male characters and their perspectives and needs, often favoring these over the POVs of the women they harm.

Criticism is how we all get better.

Quit being so damn fragile, y’all.
