For me, in the context of my bio family, my social value is decreased due to my mother’s racial identity but increased because of my father’s. Meanwhile out in the world, I generally pass for white, but I don’t operate so much like a white woman and even less so now after studying critical race theory and writing critically about whiteness and reading POC authors in a deliberate way most white people don’t.
So white women see me as a “crazy” or almost violent version of a white woman because I don’t follow their rules. White men see me as a threat to their power.
It’s amazing how much people invest in their read of a person’s image.
