I agree with much of this article, but Doyle fails to tackle the extremely problematic category of “mentally ill.”

Spears’ handlers forcibly implanted an IUD in her uterus and kept it there for a decade. Her father is controlling, abusive, and cruel. Why is she the one labeled “mentally ill?”

When women react to abuse in predictable ways which speak to our trauma, we are labeled mentally ill.

When men behave abusively, they may be termed abusers, but they are never termed mentally ill.

Let’s stop labeling survivors mentally ill for displaying symptoms of trauma.
