I have absolutely experienced job interviews go sideways or recruiters seem to look for justification not to hire me for reasons that seemed to have little to do with my actual skillset. As a disabled and neurodivergent person, it’s true that interviews are a struggle for me and I don’t always seem as polished as I wish I did. Nonetheless, the derision with which recruiters evidently view me when I make a mistake or say “um” one too many times is noticeable and often seems all out of context for the situation. It’s a derision rooted in hostility towards what I am, not towards people who say “um,” you know?
