I mean, yes..but I also think many of us are just not very good at recognizing what we need to maintain our own mental health. Like, I can exist perfectly competently in spaces with people who have good boundaries, communicate clearly, and articulate their needs and expectations. When I’m in communities where poor boundaries are the norm, though, I tend to get triggered and eventually have a PTSD/autistic meltdown..at which point the predators who like to hide in these communities blame me for their own behavior, even though their behavior is usually what caused mine to begin with.
Some communities condone abusive behavior in their leaders so long as certain invisible lines are not crossed. Those of us with histories of trauma are sometimes drawn to these communities thinking we don’t deserve better or we can “save” them. I guess being there at all is overstepping..but not for the reasons people in these communities maybe think.
