I said that I was thinking about my racial identity and whether to continue calling myself white since my mother has brown skin, and some more things about Jewish ethnicity and silencing.
Then when she told me to speak to the white lady, I told her that if she would rather I speak to the white caucus leader than to her, that was fine, but to name that directly.
I assume that’s what made her uncomfortable.
Neurodivergent people like myself tend to be very direct in our communication. This often makes people uncomfortable.
I also suspect that this particular individual was acting out of antisemitic bias and ignorance regarding Jewish ethnic complexities that she did not want to explore.
Perhaps she felt I was doing the Rachel Dolezal side shuffle, which I was not, but I understand how she might have thought that.
Nonetheless, it still seems to me that my words and the context at face value were legitimate, and if she had engaged in conversation rather than assumed conflict and ignorance on my part—well.
