I think hardship and trauma have been combined in part because trauma can be caused or contributed to by social forces like oppression. Oppression is typically depicted in Hollywood as though it makes people stronger or encourages people to become heroic. But in reality, oppression beats people down and predetermines that the most vulnerable people will be harmed again and again.
