I think part of the incontrovertible horror of the oppressive patriarchal system that became capitalism is that women have never, ever been permitted to speak freely. Ever. Anne Boleyn tried to protect her daughter, her remaining family members perhaps, and maybe even her own sanity. She’d been raised to believe that the king was the center of the world. Accepting that he was insane and a sociopath would have destroyed her.

There’s a limit to how much truth we can all accept before we lose our minds.
