I think this is exactly why it's so important for media to be conscious of the storylines it puts out there. Yes, it's important to show real aspects of human relationships, like abuse--but that also means letting characters experience the pain of the violence they experience. Romantic relationships can be more a site of violence than any other relationship, because they are so intimate. We'll never be able to explore real love until we acknowledge the ways we hurt one another, without intending to perhaps, but it happens.
