I understand what you’re saying but I don’t like the term “victim mentality.” Having worked with homeless people, I know that many people are so beaten down by the realities of their lives that they truly can’t see a way out. Given that most of these people have endured unimaginable hells, that’s not their individual fault. Self-responsibility will only ever go so far. Communities have to take some responsibility too.
Until services are offered for free to all who need them, and that includes basic housing, childcare, food and basic income, people will not be able to get their lives together under a long list of all too common circumstances.
Communities prefer to despise those who can’t rather than give them what they need.
