No one should be positing Restorative Justice as a reasonable alternative to prisons until there are useful interventions for sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse, etc.
True, the prison system sucks, works disproportionately, often punishes victims.
But that doesn't mean I think creating a system which further validates the idea that perpetrators have a meaningful narrative as to why they, say, abused a child, that needs to be heard, is the solution.
I do believe in community accountability. I do believe that often, perpetrators of violence do themselves have stories of violence to tell, and communities need to be compelled to listen.
Restorative justice does not currently offer that.
