It’s one thing to think someone’s story seems unlikely. It’s another to assume someone is lying when you really have no way of knowing.
For example, very privileged people often think I’m lying when I talk about being abused as a child, being chronically ill, or having been homeless.
I understand these experiences seem unusual to them, but like—they happened! I’ve been writing about them for years.
I find that liars assume others are lying. But people who are merely skeptical will ask questions to find out.
