Well, ideally those who wanted to close asylums would pay attention to my story of the violent man who was not institutionalized, and was released to do more harm!
Personally, I am not convinced that such men can be healed. I think the particular mix of toxic masculinity and clear mental illness at work, as well as their large stature and sexism, will make them a danger to the public for most if not all of their lives. Yet they are society's products. Their monstrosity, such as it is, is the result of society's flaws.
I suspect society hesitates to lock up men like this because--where would it end?
Would someone like Harvey Weinstein, pre-trial, be eligible? How about Louis C.K.? Clearly, these men belong in prison, and prisons are the places best suited to hold them.
Once these men were sorted from the general population, my guess is that psychiatric hospitals would be able to feel substantially more healing. For now, the staff live in fear, quite understandably.
