Yes, and HR often has what sounds like a "good explanation." In this case, I paused before signing and called the person who was going to be my supervisor to ask her to intervene on my behalf. She did not, but instead basically talked me into signing. It turns out that her perspective of the job and the situation was really inaccurate to the actual situation. Basically, I assumed that since she had the right politics and was in a position to protect me and advocate for me, that she would, but that was a completely false assumption. It was all there, right in that first interaction--she was able to see the pieces on the board, but she was fundamentally a coward who wasn't going to compromise her own position to advocate for women who couldn't or wouldn't advance her own position directly. I was lucky to leave when I did.
